Otto giorni (Day 8): Welcome to Venice
"Venice is beautiful, but like a Bergman movie is beautiful; you can admire it, but you don't really want to live in it." -- Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love
K: Leaving Munich, we were excited to head to Venice! The morning brought a breathtaking drive, still in the Alps. Our rest stop was fun – we stopped at McDonald’s, but it was not recognizable as the fast-food chain we knew. This McDonald’s had a panoramic view of the mountains and it was spotlessly clean! Who knew? More planning on the bus, as there was so much to consider in Venice. As usual, Margaret was an expert, and her help was invaluable. Our hotel, Mercurio, was tucked away on a quiet street – would we be able to find it on our own? We continued to have perfect weather, so we were able to take advantage of every evening.
E: We asked the hotel desk clerk to recommend a nearby restaurant and we were off to enjoy a multi-course meal at La Feluca Ristorante. After dinner, we ventured to the Rialto Bridge and window-shopped there and back, scouting out places to return tomorrow to buy some keepsakes for ourselves and some gifts to take back to our family. We actually had no trouble finding our way back to our hotel, as well as some chocolate gelato. |
